Clean-up events in Tallinn

 

Traditional Spring Clean-Up Campaign will start on 15th April and end on 15th May when Tallinn Day is celebrated. In 2017, the Spring Clean-Up Campaign was organised for the 26th time in Tallinn. The purpose of this campaign is to polish off the city, clean up one’s surroundings and increase people’s environmental awareness, as well as to draw their attention to the protection of the Baltic Sea.

 

 

In Tallinn, the Spring Clean-Up Campaign is organised as a voluntary initiative that is supported by the City Government’s decision of 1991. Starting from 2014, the Baltic Sea Challenge initiative has also been promoted in cooperation with other cities of the Baltic Sea. Starting from 2007, Tallinn has participated in the joint activities, which helps to reduce littering of the Baltic Sea. This year much is happening!

 

18th April “Art From Trash” travelling exhibition opening in tunnel under Vabaduse Square, the main square of the city in the front of the City Government building.

 

21st April demonstration of street washing vehicles on Rannamäe Street organised by Tallinn City Municipal Engineering Services Department.

 

21st April – celebration of the global Earth Day. 3 decorative apple trees will be planted to the courtyard of Tallinna Südalinna School with the first-grade pupils.

 

29th April the Spring Clean-Up Event “Clean Beach” at Stroomi beach organised in cooperation with the Cities of Helsinki, Turku and Saint-Petersburg.

 

29th – 30th  April and 6th – 7th May: Hazardous waste collection rounds in city districts.

 

25th April – 6th May: Waste-related project for schools “Lets’ know, see and do”.

Know – at the end of April a lesson of hazardous waste will be organised in schools where the topic of hazardous waste handling and its importance will be discussed.

See – 02.-05.05. a visit to the organisation dealing with waste handling (e.g. civic amenity sites, a company dealing with deposit packages, etc.).

Do – on Friday or Saturday, 5-6 May, cleaning campaign will be organised with a focus on cleaning.

 

15th April – 15th May Cleaning campaign in every city district of Tallinn.

 

6 th May – „Lets do it!“ campaign.

 

13th May The final day of Spring Clean-Up campaign will be held on Mother´s Day market in Mustamäe district. The most active campaign participants will be awarded and Toomas Anni will perform his best songs.

 

 

Information booklet “THE ABC OF PUBLIC FACILITIES AND MAINTENANCE”

 

“THE ABC OF PUBLIC FACILITIES AND MAINTENANCE” is prepared for the purpose of gather the information about the city maintenance into one brochure. At the beginning of the Spring Clean-Up Campaign, the brochure will be published in three languages – Estonian, Russian and English.  This year, the layout of the Maintenance ABC will be changed.

Satisfaction survey of the citizens of Tallinn shows that the Spring Clean-Up Campaign is well-known and people participate willingly in many events and cleaning campaigns. Environmental awareness of the people has increased.

Monika Jasson (B.Ec.) is a Master student at Tallinn University of Technology and works in the Environment Department of Tallinn as a project manager since 2006. She is currently responsible for environmental education campaigns and increasing environmental awareness in Tallinn city as well Tallinn’s beach clean-up campaign. Monika has been involved in other EU funded projects such as “Regions for recycling” (R4R) and “Eco-support activity”.
